1st Day in #EMS.
So I’ve finally taken a job in EMS. A local rural agency hired me part time for now. I am still working full time at my manufacturing job as of right now, but now that I have started paramedic school; it has become clear that I will not be able to keep up with the full time job’s schedule once clinical rotations start next semester. So I am now on the hunt for full time work in EMS.
Day One, Orientation #1: Only a 6 hr shift, pretty basic stuff. Payroll paper work, uniform fitting, meeting the crews, and then I looked over the ambulances real good to see the layout of each. We briefly went over some of the equipment before we were toned out for a 911 call. I’m just riding along on the emergent calls right now, they want me to just drive non-emergent for a few calls until I get used to the handling of the ambulances. Calls with this agency always take a while due to the locations covered and the distance to the hospitals. Our first call was about 12 mins away from the station running lights and sirens. Transport to the hospital (20 miles away) was about 30 mins (non-emergent). That was pretty much it for day one. I drove back to the station… familiarized myself with the station a little bit, ate dinner, studied for class a little bit, then updated the supervisors laptop for a little while before calling it a day.
I’ve still got a little anxiety about the job.. not being real familiar with the area and the roads, and of course the fact that I haven’t really ran any real emergency calls yet. It looks like I’ll have at least two more orientation days before they cut me loose on a two man crew.
Dusting off the blog…
So I originally planned to blog regularly throughout EMT-Basic class and chronicle from start to finish my journey to becoming a Paramedic. So much for that idea. I pretty much blogged nothing throughout Basic. I still want this to be a simple, non-formal little place to throw my experiences out there for everyone thinking about getting into EMS and those that are just getting in and wondering what to expect next. ( I will try to throw together some rough little what to expect things from EMT-Basic)
I’m going to start trying again to post regular updates, maybe if a few people get interested and start reading…. they can help keep me motivated to post about what is happening. Just remember that I’m new to EMS and i don’t really know what’s going on in the field yet. So if you are experienced in the field… take it easy on me.
If you could go only to one restaurant for the next five years, which would it be?
Ru San’s. I love Japanese food.
∞ How to Sync Google Mail, contacts, and calendar to your iPad.
I use Google apps for everything….. so I was relieved that a workaround exists to sync with my calendar.
